Stokab
About us
Stokab is a municipally owned limited company that owns and operates the world's largest open urban fiber network in the Stockholm region. Through a redundant and fine-meshed fiber network, with connections to virtually all properties, data centers and mobile towers, we create unique opportunities for businesses to design secure, scalable and service-independent network structures. As a network wholesaler, Stokab leases out dark fiber to companies and organizations. We help our customers design their network according to their requirements for security, availability and redundancy - and with insight into how the network is structured.

Take control of your business' digital security
Having knowledge of how your companies network is structured is crucial to creating true redundancy, high availability and reliable communication – even during disruptions and crises. With Stokab's dark fiber, organizations gain control over their network design, capacity and security, as if the network were their own. Without insight into how the fiber is laid, it can be difficult to know whether redundant connections are truly physically separated. When the organization itself has control over the network design, it becomes possible to build verifiable redundancy and reduce the risk of common points of failure – an important part of the work with resilience, crisis preparedness and compliance with NIS2. Stokab's fine-mesh fiber network provides access to basically all properties, data centers and mobile towers in the Stockholm region. This creates great opportunities to adapt the network's function, delivery and capacity to the specific needs of the business. All parts of the network are documented and can be followed up and developed over time – which strengthens both operational reliability and long-term control. By combining physical infrastructure and long-term ownership, Stokab creates the conditions for a digital infrastructure that is robust, flexible and built to function even under future stresses. Create independence from digital suppliers
All businesses have different requirements for their digital infrastructure. With Stokab's open dark fiber network, the network can be designed entirely based on the organization's needs - regardless of whether the focus is on high availability, geographical separation, future scalability or collaboration with multiple suppliers. Thanks to the network's scope and structure, there is great freedom to choose routes, nodes and connections. For example, we have over 23,000 access points in Stockholm. We are happy to help organizations in the work of designing a network structure that creates the best possible conditions for secure and robust communication. Regardless of the later choice of technology and services, fiber is the foundation of the network design - now and in the future. Once the network design is in place, the organization can choose how the connection and operation will take place - either in-house or via procured operators and suppliers, for example through the Swedish Agency for Administrative and Financial Affairs' framework agreement. This provides flexibility, long-term planning and the opportunity to adapt the solution over time, without being locked into a single actor. Secure operation for critical systems
A robust fiber network is built not only for today's needs, but also to function under future stresses. Stokab's long-term and stable ownership means that the network is always built with preparedness, scalability and endurance in focus. Stokab's network is built with standardized material choices and ducting that enable future expansion of fiber. This creates flexibility over time and makes it possible to strengthen or adapt the network without having to rebuild from scratch. The high degree of documentation in the network means that connections can be quickly analyzed, verified and, if necessary, rerouted. In the event of an interruption or disruption, there are conditions to quickly identify the impact and create alternative routes for communication - a crucial ability for socially critical operations and a central part of the work with risk management and incident preparedness according to NIS2. The operational reliability of Stokab's fiber network is further strengthened through, for example, high inventory, backup power and access to mobile reserve nodes for crisis establishment. We have a local operations organization with in-depth knowledge of the network's structure, which ensures rapid restoration and continuous availability, even during high-alert situations.

A neutral infrastructure for a flexible and scalable network
Stokab owns and operates the world's largest open urban fiber network – a neutral digital infrastructure that forms the basis for communication, innovation and social functions in the Stockholm region. The network's geographical scope extends from Nynäshamn in the south to Norrtälje in the north, via the Stockholm archipelago in the east and around Lake Mälaren in the west. The fiber network is mostly laid underground, but is also found in tunnels, along tracks and as a submarine cable. The design of the network makes it possible to quickly switch fiber connections and redirect traffic when necessary. As a network owner, Stokab offers black fiber – without its own services and traffic in the network. The open and neutral model guarantees equal conditions for all actors, strengthens competitiveness and contributes to digital independence for companies, organizations and social actors. Stokab has a clear role in total defense and actively participates in the work to strengthen Sweden's digital resilience. Security work is conducted in close collaboration with relevant authorities and includes exercises, emergency planning and continuous development of routines for crisis situations and increased readiness. Parts of this work are done quietly for natural reasons, but contribute to a safer and more robust digital infrastructure for society at large. Sustainability work is integrated into Stokab's daily operations and long-term planning, with a focus on the environment, work environment, ethics and societal benefit. We strive to contribute to safe and sustainable digital development - today and for the future. Read more about Stokab, our customers and our mission:
